How to become a LIcenced building official

There are two common paths to becoming a licenced building official

Path 1:

Complete the Building Code Training for Canadians (BCTC) course through Southeast Regional College in Weyburn.  This course is currently based off of the 2010 NBC and includes three exams. 

Path 2:

Complete the Saskatchewan Building Officials Association home study training program (challenge exams).  This is currently based off of the 2015 NBC and includes 2 exams. 


In addition to either path mentioned above, the “Legislative Framework Training” (LFT) course must also be completed.


A record of employment for a minimum of 2 years full-time (or equivalent) in a related occupation is also required to obtain a Class 1 Building Official Licence.
